Homepage Dan (17)“It was fun because it was creative and different. I’d never done anything like that before and so it was something new.” Amy (15)“Scouts are always trying to be older than they are but Explorers get the balance right” Steve (14)“Doing activities like zip wire, a long walk in the countryside and afterwards, I felt so much closer with everyone” Lucy (15)“Navigation is dull but they made it interesting by making us plan routes to do in the dark!” Tristan (18)“Christmas Camp 2017 or 2018- can’t remember which I enjoyed more :)” Patrick (17)“I have used skills gained in Explorers to help other people who lack confidence, I helped them realise that no one is judging you as much as you may think they are.” About Explorers were established in 2005 as part of a major refresh of the Scout movement, bringing a modern look and feel to Scouting with new uniforms, new sections, and a fresh approach. In 2011, Explorers in Bournemouth evolved again when Bournemouth Stour and Avon merged to form Bournemouth District. Today, five Explorer units operate across Bournemouth: Wednesdays – Piranha Thursdays – Genesis, Supernova Fridays – Pioneer, Horizon Find out more about our units here. Or check out our programmes: Supernova Genesis Piranha Horizon Pioneer What We Do Explorers take part in all the classic Scouting activities—camping, climbing, hiking, sailing, canoeing, pioneering, map reading, team-building, and plenty of games. But that’s just the start! Bournemouth Explorers have also tackled zorbing, white-water rafting and kayaking, the UK’s largest zipline, high ropes courses, talent nights, night hikes, challenge hikes, geocaching, mountain biking, and much more! With five international camps in the past decade—and another planned for 2026 — we’re a thriving, adventurous Explorer District with a fantastic leadership team ready to support your next step in Scouting. And honestly? There’s way too much to list here! Check out our gallery and Year in Explorers to see what we’ve been up to. More Than Just Adventure While camping and outdoor activities are at the heart of Scouting, the skills you develop as an Explorer can also lead to formal qualifications. Scouting is highly valued on a CV, demonstrating commitment, leadership, and teamwork within a recognised youth organisation. In 2025, we started running Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award, supporting the newly renamed King’s Scout Award—helping Explorers gain even more valuable experience and recognition. Explorers is all about pushing boundaries and trying new things. We’re always looking for fresh challenges—whether it’s taking on real-life Monopoly in London with 35 Explorers in 2022 or building soapbox-style go-karts from freight pallets! The adventure never stops—what will you take on next? Supporting Explorers – How You Can Help? Explorer Scouts is a charity and relies on fundraising and membership to keep running. We raise funds in a variety of ways, including fetes, bag packing, Gift Aid, online promotions, event support, and donations from organisations. Thanks to successful fundraising, we’ve been able to achieve our goal of attending international camps every four years, build a purpose-built Explorer HQ, and equip it with high-quality gear for our adventures. But it’s not just funding that keeps us going—we also need leaders! If you have a few hours a week and want to share your skills, experience, and time to help inspire the next generation, we’d love to hear from you.
